The Muttleys Story
My experience with dogs began 5 decades ago!
I was born into a house full of Toy Poodles and one Rhodesian Ridgeback.
He was my fathers and slightly more manly than a toy breed, (though most Toy Poodles would disagree).
After lots of work and many, many miles around the country, my mother fulfilled her dream of breeding a champion at Crufts toy poodle Talisee Snuffbox.
When her champion Poodle died, we then switched focus towards the training and breeding of German Shepherds. My hobby by the age of 10 was obedience training and scent search. Several of our puppies became police dogs and two were even decorated in the line of duty!
So, my first playmates and best friends were furry, and it’s pretty much remained the same ever since!
As you can see my love of animals stemmed from my formative years and my knowledge and understanding of dogs has developed ever since.
Over the years I have rescued, rehabilitated and rehomed many dogs and even some other furry friends: notably ferrets, fancy rats, squirrels and hedgehogs! And the occasional seagull.
I spent many years teaching in schools, following my completion of a Psychology BSc Hons degree and PGCE teaching qualification. Gaining valuable experience dealing with children in mainstream school but also within special needs emotional, behavioural and educational issues.
My early exposure to caring for animals had impressed on me the need for an empathetic approach towards working with these children. There are sometimes striking similarities between animal and child behaviour, for example difficulties communicating their feelings, further highlighting the importance of being able to interpret other ways of communication such as body language and facial expressions.
I have also worked as a counsellor for children with complex issues and am currently looking into the possibilities of treating individuals, with the use of dogs to aid the process of recovery and growth.
My unique background has enabled me to help ensure that the fundamentals of a pet-owner relationship (companionship, enjoyment and love) can develop and flourish with the ultimate aim of achieving happy, fulfilling pet families.
If you feel there are areas of behaviour and or obedience with your pet, or if you would like to improve your confidence as a pet owner, which can often be the crux of a lot of issues with your pet, let me help.
I am aptly suited to help if your pet has issues with obedience and/or behaviour, whilst simultaneously increasing your confidence as a pet owner.
